Periodontal disease is most commonly caused by a buildup of plaque – a thick film of bacteria – on the gums and teeth. Gum disease can be caused by a number of factors, including the following:
- Smoking and tobacco use
- Diabetes
- Stress
- Genetic factors
- Crooked teeth
- Certain medications
- Hormonal changes, especially in women
Diagnosis requires an examination and consultation by one of our qualified gum disease dentists, who can determine the best treatment plan for your unique smile.
Is gum disease common?
Yes, gum disease is extremely common. According to the CDC, more than 47% of adults over the age of 30 have some form of gum disease.
What are the signs of gum disease?
Some of the most common signs of gum disease include: bleeding gums (especially when flossing or brushing), persistent bad breath, tooth sensitivity, bright red or inflamed gums, pain while chewing or talking, receding gums, and loose teeth. If you notice any of these symptoms you should visit a periodontist to get diagnosed and treated.
What is the difference between gingivitis and periodontitis?
Gingivitis describes the early stages of gum disease when excess plaque begins to form around the base of the teeth, leading to gum inflammation and discomfort. Periodontitis occurs when gingivitis has gone untreated. In this stage, small holes begin to form between the teeth and gums, allowing harmful bacteria to build up and lead to bone loss.
What are the best gum disease treatments?
Most periodontal treatments involve deep cleaning of plaque and any existing spaces between the teeth and gums, along with a comprehensive at-home dental care plan. For more extreme cases, your gum disease dentist may recommend surgical removal of damaged tissue and reconstruction of the bone.
How can I prevent gum disease?
The best way to prevent gum disease is to practice daily at-home dental care such as brushing, flossing, and using a quality mouthwash. It’s also important to come in and get professional cleanings and exams twice a year.
